Deadlines in a Competency-Based System
In a Competency Based System, students often complete work outside the classroom setting, or design independent projects outright. The ability to complete work in a timely manner, and managing real deadlines, is a valuable skill that students need to develop, and consequently, students are required to design projects with concrete deadlines. In addition, students will have a standard deadline for completion of work once a class ends.
History of the Expiration Policy
The evolution of the Project Expiration Policy, including Staff Senate notes will be added, as well.
Project Expiration policy
Expiration date on projects designed with a teacher who leaves: one month after the teacher leaves
Expiration date on projects designed in a class: one quarter after the class ends
Expiration dates will be built in to independently designed project
All work needs to be completed BEFORE graduation gateway - (i.e. NO remainders such as post grad portfolio)
REASONS: Building in success for student completion and modeling natural/authentic consequences
Deadlines be negotiated before June 19 for any remaining outstanding work from classes, projects previous to this decision.
